"To eat well in England, you should have a breakfast three times a day" said Somerset Maugham.
At St John's Lodge B & B hotel in Windermere the quality and choice of breakfasts on offer is simply amazing. That's why it can truly be described as the Lake District food lover's paradise. Traditionalists who like to tuck in to a full Lakes breakfast will enjoy the award winning sausages and bacon from Huddleston's of Windermere and the fresh free range eggs from Rosthwaite Farm near Bowness-on-Windermere. Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a fantastic range of home made veggie dishes - not your usual processed stuffprovided by many hotels. There is also a good range of quality fresh fish on offer.
Creative Vegetarian & Vegan food
The emphasis for Lake District vegetarian and vegan customers visiting St John's Lodge Lakes guest house in Windermere is definitely on choice, quality and creativity.
As team leader Julian said , "I've been a vegetarian for 22 years. I'm often asked, since I'm in catering, how I cope physically and morally preparing cooking and serving meat and fish dishes. No problem.... since my job at St John's Lodge in Windermere is to deliver quality breakfast dishes for ALL our Lake District customers.
The key thing for me is to be working in a vibrant, professional kitchen where vegetarian and vegan food is taken seriously and veggie customers treated with respect rather than derision, something I have often experienced when staying in other hotels on my own travels throughout the UK.
St John's Lodge, Windermere, Lakes b & b has truly kicked the old 'get what you're given' hotel ethos into touch. Beans on toast is a classic vegetarian dish but only if you've chosen it yourself. By careful planning, preparation and presentation our Lake District vegetarian and vegan customers can enjoy a quality veggie breakfast experience here in the lakes . Because we have a professional, well organised kitchen, our Lakes veggie and vegan customers can feel safe in the knowledge that their food has not come in to contact with any non vegetarian products either in the preparation or the cooking"
There is also a good range of gluten free (and dairy free dishes) to suite vegetarian and vegan, coeliac customers visiting this Lake District, bed and breakfast. And unlike many other hotels you don't need to give advanced warning of any dietry requirements, simply turn up. Gluten, Wheat & Dairy Free, Coeliac breakfasts

Experience gained over the last 12 years at St John's Lodge lakes B & B in Windermere has confirmed to the owners how important "peace of mind" can be for customers with individual dietary requirements. Their caring attitude was best summed up by Sue who is also a qualified nurse and works at the local Windermere GP Practice "We have a very close friend who suffers from coeliac disease. We understand the problems associated with gluten, wheat and dairy free diets. Cross contamination can be a major issue if gluten free food is not handled in the correct manner. Fortunately we have a professional kitchen with enough space for separate preparation areas, toasters etc. Because all our food, apart from gluten free sausage, is home made on our Windermere premises, we know exactly what goes in to it. The Gluten-free Food and Drink Directory has become our bible. We source only quality ingredients from reputable companies".
It is important to stress from a coeliac point of view that this lakes guest house appreciates the importance of cross contamination issues. Simply offering gluten free sausage on the hotel breakfast menu does not guarantee that the food has been stored, cooked and served in the correct manner. Guests staying at St John's Lodge B & B in The Lake District can however rest safe in the knowledge that all the staff are fully aware of the problems associated with coeliac disease. Furthermore they fully understand the need to keep all gluten and wheat free products entirely seperate from all other food items at every stage in the catering process.

Lisa who has worked for four years at St John's Lodge lakes B & B in Windermere is a regular user of the Parklands Hotel Lake District facilites
"After a long walk or perhaps a run there's nothing better than chilling out around the pool area at Parklands Hotel leisure club" said Lisa. "The sauna and steam room are really relaxing but if you're feeling extra fit why not work out in the gym like I do".

In order to save energy and reduce the carbon footprint of this Lake District guest house, solar panels and energy efficient gas boilers have been fitted. Further energy savings have been made by fitting low energy light fittings and dual flush toilets. Sue and Barry buy most of their produce for the B & B locally and recycle the majority of the guest house waste.
